Big news in Sussex: WGMD reports ~ UPDATED: Sussex P&Z Approves RV City Applications after Love Creek-Area - Residents Rally On Circle To Oppose RV City
UPDATED - 6:45pm: The Planning & Zoning Commission has voted to recommend approval of both the Conditional Use and the Change of Zone for the RV City project. The vote for each of the applications was 4 to 1. The applications will now go back before the Sussex County Council for consideration at a future date. Public hearings on both applications were held in February before the County Council.===================================================
About 90 residents from communities in the area of Love Creek held a rally on The Circle in Georgetown to once again express their opposition to the proposed "RV City" campground that's been planned near their homes. Around 100 signed in to attend Thursday night's Sussex County Planning & Zoning Commission meeting.
Residents from seven communities who claim their properties will be negatively impacted by the campground say they want to let the commission know that an RV campground simply doesn't fit into the area. They also say RVs will greatly increase traffic on roads that weren't designed to handle such large vehicles, such as Plantations and Cedar Grove Roads. Residents of The Retreat at Love Creek who spoke to WGMD say traffic has increased since they moved in over the past several years. They've also expressed concerns about environmental impacts on the creek and its wetlands and shoreline, as well as the ability of first responders to get through traffic in the event of an emergency at the campground, which would be owned by Jack Lingo Asset Management.
The group "Stop RV City" has received a lot of support in its opposition to the campground. More than 1,250 residents have signed petitions opposing the project, compared to just 11 who've written to support it. At the Planning & Zoning Commission's meeting in January, 150 residents attended the meeting to speak in opposition to the campground, including 40 who waited in the hallway outside. 190 people came out to oppose the campground during a public hearing before the County Council in February. More than 50 residents have written letters to the editor in a local newspaper to explain why they oppose the project, and detail their concerns about it. Members of "Stop RV City" say there are places in the area for RV campgrounds, such as Holly Lake Campground.
