Pacem Updates
Movie: This week we have the movie I Am on Tuesday evening. See you there!
Announcement: Pacem Hiring!
Pacem in Terris is hiring a part-time Administrative Assistant. Four days per week, four hours per day and flexible scheduling. That's the good news. As the proverbial not-well-endowed non-profit, the hourly salary is, for now, low.
Announcement: Annual Dinner and Peacemakers Among Us Award
“For it isn’t enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And it isn’t enough to believe in it. One must work at it.” -- Eleanor Roosevelt
As part of Pacem in Terris's Annual Dinner this coming October 24, we recognize peacemakers who work and live among us. We celebrate the lives of members of our community who not only believe in peace and justice but also work at making them a reality in our times. We are interested in recognizing those who have been involved in peace and justice efforts through local, state, national or global initiatives, programs, and/or organizations. If you know a Peacemaker Among Us whom you believe should be recognized, please submit their name, a short description of their work, and an explanation of why you are nominating them.
These nominations should be submitted by September 20. Please email here, or mail them to: Pacem in Terris, 1304 N. Rodney St., Wilmington, DE 19806-4227. Recipients will be notified by October 4, 2013.
We look forward to celebrating the spirit and efforts of those who share in our vision of a world of peace and justice.
Wilmington in Transition Update
Wilmington In Transition (a Pacem in Terris program) seeks to promote local economic, cultural and environmental resilience and sustainability. WIT invites you to a Delaware Hour Exchange Summer Mixer. The Delaware Hour Exchange is WIT’s latest project –- a local Time Bank, modeled on the international Time Bank movement. (For more information on Time Banks, see here.)
At the mixer you will meet existing members, learn about how The DE Hour Exchange works, sign up and start making exchanges on the spot! No experience necessary. Please join us, and help us help each other –- together we can create the community in which we’d like to live! (and it is fun, too!). All are welcome.
To learn more . . .
You can R.S.V.P. on facebook, or Meetup.com (Delaware Hour Exchange) – but it is not required.
Meeting is at Westminster Presbyterian Church – Grace Hall, Sat. Aug. 17th, from 5pm – 7pm.
Death Penalty Update
This year, because of all of your hard work and support, we have made significant progress in bringing an end to the death penalty in Delaware. Our coalition has grown to 26 partner organizations, representing over 55,000 Delawareans. Nearly 3,000 of you have signed our petition, written to your legislators, and attended our events in support of death penalty repeal!
But our work is not done yet. Senate Bill 19 was tabled in the House Judiciary Committee this April, which means we need to convince one additional committee member that the bill deserves a vote. The DE Repeal Project, along with all of our partner organizations, are as committed as ever to ending the death penalty. We are using these upcoming months to plan and grow the abolition movement and we need your support to ensure that Senate Bill 19 passes when legislative session begins again in January. Learn more and what you can do.

This Tuesday (August 13), at 7:00 pm, Pacem in Terris will host the last film in its summer series.

I Am
I Am is an utterly engaging and entertaining non-fiction film that poses two practical and provocative questions: what’s wrong with our world, and what can we do to make it better? The filmmaker behind the inquiry is Tom Shadyac, one of Hollywood’s leading comedy practitioners and the creative force behind such blockbusters as “Ace Ventura” and “Bruce Almighty.” However, in I AM, Shadyac steps in front of the camera to recount what happened to him after a cycling accident left him incapacitated, possibly for good. Though he ultimately recovered, he emerged with a new sense of purpose, determined to share his own awakening to his prior life of excess and greed, and to investigate how he as an individual, and we as a race, could improve.
Poverty Update
The Charitable-Industrial Complex By Peter Buffett.
"It’s time for a new operating system. Not a 2.0 or a 3.0, but something built from the ground up. New code.

"What we have is a crisis of imagination. Albert Einstein said that you cannot solve a problem with the same mind-set that created it.
"There are people working hard at showing examples of other ways to live in a functioning society that truly creates greater prosperity for all (and I don’t mean more people getting to have more stuff).
"Money should be spent trying out concepts that shatter current structures and systems that have turned much of the world into one vast market. Is progress really Wi-Fi on every street corner? No."
