New Castle County to hold grand opening of Glasgow Bark Park
New Castle County Executive Tom Gordon and Councilman David Tackett are scheduled to hold a ribbon cutting for the new Bark Park for dogs at Glasgow Regional Park on Friday afternoon.
Gordon said he and Councilman Tackett have had a shared vision for the Bark Park in Glasgow since 2002, during Gordon’s last term in office.
“Glasgow Park is one of the outstanding, regional parks that New Castle County has to offer residents and visitors alike,” County Executive Gordon said. “To be able to add this amenity is going to make it inviting to more people.”
The bark park falls in line with the County Executive’s goal of establishing county parks that welcome everyone and improve quality of life throughout New Castle County.
Councilman Tackett was thankful that the bark park had finally come to fruition.
“It has long been my goal to provide the community with a place where they can walk or run in the clean fresh air, a child can play on a sliding board, and bring their dogs for a great place with the family,” Tackett said. “The completion of the bark park is just another step in achieving this this goal.”
New Castle County Council President Christopher Bullock said this Bark Park would serve as a model for other neighborhoods and districts throughout New Castle County.
“Improving the quality of life for families and their pets is a priority for this Council,” he said.
Located on more than 200 acres at Del. Routes 896 & 40, Glasgow Regional Park currently provides a number of outdoor activities including walking trails, a sledding hill and a skate park. The new Bark Park is a place where people and their dogs can socialize with other canines and their owners in an area fenced off from the rest of the park so as to not interfere with the enjoyment of the park by other visitors.
The ribbon cutting is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Friday at Glasgow Regional Park off Pulaski Highway (Rt. 40) and South College Avenue (Rt. 896) near Newark. The Bark Park is on the western side of the park, near the weekly Farmers Market. Farmers have been asked to set up earlier than usual in order to be present during the grand opening. [The canine area is close to the historic farm buildings remaining from The Hermitage, a former agricultural complex at the site.]
The Delaware Humane Association is also scheduled to hold a Vaccination Clinic from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and donations for local shelters and animal shelters will also be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
