Comment rescue ~ Christiana Historic Society: DelDOT Meeting On Plans To Close East Main Street At Route 273 Set For 6:30PM September 12th
Simply unbelievable. The same people who created the mess in this area, are virtually the same people proposing non-solutions. Glad Sen. Townsend and Sen. Peterson stepped up and voiced their concerns with this "flawed" project along with many other residents. There are workable solutions to this man-created problem. It just may take a bit more care and tact than the typical 'by-the-book' traffic engineer is used to. Which is also why the road network in NCCo is just so damn inefficient and ugly, but I digress...(News Journal) Melissa Nann Burke reports ~ Christiana residents say Del. 1 ramp plan is flawed
The state is no longer pushing to dead-end Del. 7 in Christiana just north of Del. 273, but unhappy residents say revised plans still would cut off an entrance to the community and eliminate a crossroads that played a role in colonial history. “You need to go back to the drawing board,” resident Lisa Snyder told DelDOT officials during a public meeting Thursday that drew about 130 people to the Christiana fire hall. “I’m asking you to help protect our history, our culture, our economy, and work with us to find another solution. Personally, it will devastate us and our neighbors,” added Snyder, who heads the Christiana Historical Society and the 7&40 Alliance civic organization.
........DelDOT’s latest design incorporates a one-way exit along southbound Del. 7, which is East Main Street in Christiana. Motorists only could turn right onto westbound Del. 273 in the latest plan. Drivers also would no longer be able to enter Christiana from the intersection of Del. 273 and Del. 7, which would be altered to make way for new highway ramps for southbound Del. 1.........During Thursday’s meeting, property owners said cutting off East Main Street would load more traffic onto Old Baltimore Pike - the other corridor creating the village crossroads – hurt businesses and impair access to churches and homes. A Christiana Fire Co. official said the closure may hurt delivery of emergency services. The typical and safest route is down East Main Street, in part because the majority of the population the fire company serves is in that direction, said Christiana Fire Deputy Chief Kevin Cowperthwaite.........“This is a really sad story of a very historic town whose options have been cut down by development and proposed development all around them,” state Sen. Bryan Townsend said before the meeting. “We should stop that immediately and find another solution.”........“The village, in my view, is being choked to death by bad decisions,” said state Sen. Karen Peterson, who represents half the area.
