Newark, DE Residents Organize Against the Construction of a Power Plant
Demand a stop to the proposed power plant on University of Delaware STAR Campus--plan a protest on September 21st.
NEWARK, DE — Residents of Newark, DE are organizing in opposition to a proposed 248 MW power plant slated for their town and plan to join a protest on September 21, 2013 from 4:30-6pm on S. College Ave across from the University of Delaware Stadium and the UD STAR Campus, the site of the proposed power plant. The residents hope to educate members of the UD community on their way to the football game at the Delaware Stadium and voice their opposition to the University's President, its Board of Trustees and the Newark City Council and other elected officials.
Newark Residents Against the Power Plant is a grassroots group that has sprung up in the face of the power plant proposed by The Data Centers, LLC. The University of Delaware leased land on its STAR Campus to TDC. TDC plans to build a 900,000 square foot facility that will house a data center and a natural gas powered plant to generate power to run the data center and to sell power to the grid. If built, the power plant would have as much generating capacity as one quarter the power generation of the Hope Creek Thermal Nuclear Power Plant.
Residents are disturbed by the lack of oversight and the method with which this project is being undertaken. The University and TDC are claiming this project is allowed on land zoned to not allow power plants because the power generation will be “incidental and subordinate”, which is allowed under the zoning the University negotiated with the City of Newark when they purchased the shuttered Chrysler plant site in 2009. There are still many questions about this interpretation. In addition, the City of Newark signed a confidentiality agreement with TDC and had been in private talks with the company for over one year before residents even found out about the project.
On Saturday, September 21st, concerned residents will meet in front of the Newark Amtrak Station parking lot on S. College Ave. (896) at 4:30pm. They will make their way towards the Delaware Stadium and take up a station across from the Stadium and in front of the STAR Campus until 6pm.
There is also a community meeting (link HERE) scheduled on September 24th from 7-9 at Newark High School where residents can voice their concerns. A recent community meeting on September 3rd drew approximately 500 people, with some unable to get in the building listening through open windows. Residents have also regularly been attending Newark City Council meetings (the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month) to voice their concerns.
