WHYY: Supporters in Delaware defend healthcare reform (VIDEO)
"We are focusing on the 90,000 individuals who do not have insurance and those individuals who might want to shop around for other types of insurance," Landgraf said.
State Rep. Mike Barbieri, D-Newark, says the reform act gives middle class families health care security and must be preserved. "We need to make sure that they can't repeal this, that they won't repeal this, and that we fight to make sure that all people in the United States have insurance and have the ability to get quality health care."
News Journal: Jim DeMint tells Delaware crowd that Obamacare is un-American
Invited by organizers to speak at the morning event, State Health and Social Services Secretary Rita Landgraf touted the 6,000 young adults in Delaware who have been allowed to remain covered under their parents’ insurance plans because of the legislation, and the 257,000 patients with preexisting conditions that their insurance now must cover.
Delaware Democratic Sen. Tom Carper also released a statement prior to the Heritage Action event, supporting the health care law.
“Delaware has become a national leader in health care thanks in no small part to the Affordable Care Act,” he said. “Instead of recognizing how it has already been successful and helping find ways to further implement it as effectively as possible, many on the right are threatening extreme measures like shutting down the government.”
WDEL: Hundreds of Obamacare opponents call for defunding (AUDIO)
DeMint says allowing Obamare to take effect could mean financial disaster. "I'm not willing to unleash that plague on America in hopes that we can unravel it later," DeMint says. He is urging the law's opponents to hold their lawmakers accountable and demand that Congress act to defund Obamacare.
However, Barbieri insists the law should go forward as enacted. He says mandatory coverage for all Americans will greatly reduce healthcare costs. "The more we have young people who are healthy in the insurance pool who are paying a premium, the more we could spread the risk out over a larger group of people," Barbieri says.
News Journal: Affordable Care Act focus of event
State officials held an event this morning in support of the federal health care reform law, casting the event as pre-emptive rebuttal to a conservative group’s anti-Obamacare event scheduled for 7 tonight in Brandywine Hundred.
The event this morning, organized by the liberal advocacy group Americans United for Change, touted health care services made available to Delawareans by the Affordable Care Act. Delaware Secretary of Health and Social Services Rita Landgraf was invited to the event by organizers to discuss the state Health Insurance Marketplace provided for under the law and said it will soon be open to thousands of residents. “When Delaware’s Health Insurance Marketplace opens for enrollment on Oct. 1, we will take the next step to extending affordable health insurance and quality care to Delawareans who are uninsured or underinsured,” she said. “For those individuals and their families, there is no greater comfort than knowing that you have health insurance if you are sick or injured. A variety of plans and the possibility of tax credits will help individuals find the coverage that is right for their needs.”
As Delaware prepares to launch open enrollment for its Health Insurance Marketplace on Oct. 1, Secretary of the Department of Health and Social Services Rita Landgraf says state leaders are trying to get the facts out about the Affordable Care Act's implementation to the tens of thousands of Delawareans without health insurance. Supporters of health care reform in Delaware laid out their defense of the changes, ahead of a town hall scheduled in Wilmington, Thursday night, hosted by former Republican U.S. Senator from South Carolina Jim DeMint.
