My good friend Earnie Davis writes ~ Incinerator plans make us as unsafe as Syrian citizens
I am deeply concerned about the proposed tire incinerator in New Castle. It will emit extremely toxic benzene, toluene, formaldehyde, lead, cadmium and mercury near a residential community and a half mile from two schools. The proposers state this kind of plant has been run on an experimental scale with minimal emissions. But it is going to be on an industrial scale. Who knows how well it will work? What happens as the equipment ages?
What toxic burdens do to human bodies is an area of expanding research as scientists attempt to find out what our “better living through chemistry” is doing to us. Syria deliberately poisoned the air of its own citizens with deadly sarin gas to win its civil war.
Delaware is considering deliberately risking poisoning the air that some of its own men, women and children breathe with toxins and carcinogens in an attempt to improve its economy. If this plant is approved and built, the plant owners and investors will make their profit. The men, women and children who live near the plant will have their health and lives put at risk.
And it is the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control – created to protect our health and lives – will have put them at risk if it approves this plant. If DNREC does not protect us from these kind of dangers, then who will?
