I was tickled pink to see Josh Shannon's article at Newark Post online yesterday ~ Charting a new path for Cleveland Heights: Rebirth on the horizon for shuttered housing project
The Newark Housing Authority’s bold vision to redevelop the property took a major step forward last month when the state housing authority approved $11.5 million in tax credits to fund the project.
“We’ve come a long way,” said Marene Jordan, executive director of the NHA, the government-funded non-profit organization that manages Cleveland Heights and other subsidized housing in the city.
The group’s plan calls for razing the existing brick buildings and replacing them with new, townhouse-style apartments containing between one and four apartments. An additional 14 units would be added, bringing the site’s total up to 54.
The proposal also includes a community center, a playground and open green space.
You may remember the photographs from a few years back that showed lines three people thick, of needy and deserving Delawareans seeking affordable housing, snaking around the Newark Housing Authority offices and a block further on down Main Street [Story HERE].
The Housing Authority Board in Newark has made GIANT strides in managing their affairs. Their new plans for housing and amenities on the Cleveland Avenue site is a sight for sore eyes.
