In another sign of the slow recovery, people using food stamps in Delaware is significantly higher now than it was three years ago. Economists say the recovery began in June 2009. Six months later, in January 2010, there were 109,215 Delawareans enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). In April of this year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reports there were nearly 154,000 Delawareans – or about one-in-every-six state residents – receiving food stamps. (See graph.) According to a Governing Magazine article, food stamp usage nationally has increased over the last three years. Currently, about one-in-every-seven Americans are on the program.
