Congress voted to increase their salary 13 times since 1991. 

In that same time period, they raised the federal minimum wage for hourly workers by $3. Tipped workers saw no increase; they still make $2.13 an hour. 

If the minimum wage had kept up with the growth in productivity since 1968, it would now be $18.67 per hour! Of course, no one is suggesting a current minimum wage of $18.67 per hour, but Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Representative George Miller (D-CA) have proposed raising in the minimum wage to $10.10 by 2015.  A modest proposal indeed.

Raising the minimum wage would not just help the working poor; it would boost the economy as a whole. According to the Economic Policy Institute, raising the minimum wage to $10.10 would increase consumer spending, resulting in approximately140,000 net new jobs over three years.

The Fair Minimum Wage Act raises the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour and indexes it to inflation.  July 24th marks the anniversary of the raise in the minimum wage.  Today, you can help by taking one or more of the following steps to help raise the wage:

1. Participate in a rally to raise the minimum wage in a city near you.  Check outthis list field actions happening across the country;

1. Sign ADA's petition calling on support of the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2013;

1. Send this tweet:  "We cannot wait another year to raise the federal minimum wage - now is the time!  #raisethewage;"

1. Make a special contribution to ADA.
