No Newark Power Plant reports ~ Jen Wallace To Newark City Council: Could the University Purchase Power from TDC?
I have some very grave concerns regarding the Electric Service Agreement between the City and the University of Delaware dated January 23, 2013, especially in light of my questions at the September 23, 2013 City Council meeting. On September 23rd, I asked if the University has to purchase power from the City and would they be able to purchase power from TDC. The City Manager stated that the University has to buy power from the city and cannot purchase power from any other source according to the ESA.
Looking over the ESA, I have some concerns that the University can in fact purchase power from TDC.My concerns are drawn specifically from:
- Number 13 & 14,
- Paragraph 4 on A-1,
- Paragraph 4 on A-2,
- and Paragraph 5 on A-3 of the ESA.
I would also like to point out the Letter of Intent from DEMEC to TDC of Dec. 17, 2012 on which the City Manager is listed as having received a copy. In this letter DEMEC expresses their interest in a potential contract between DEMEC and TDC for the purchase of power from TDC.What I think this means is that as long as the City contracts with TDC via DEMEC, then the University will in fact be able to get their power from TDC.
On September 3rd at the meeting at the George Wilson Center, The Data Centers LLC said that they would be paying more than $10 million in taxes. At the October 14 meeting at the University of Delaware that figure has fallen to $4.4 million. What will the final figure be?
And (News Journal ) Melissa Nann Burke reports ~ Public sounds off on Newark data center, power plant proposal with comment rescues ~- Leave it to Delaware AGAIN--Our State Government, Markell, and others trying to ram another down our throats. Data Center has never built a "center" before--won't tell anyone the business model or plan, nor will they share how they're coming across a BILLION dollars in financing.
I'm all about more jobs for the citizens, but this is getting ridiculous.
- even a cursory look at the data center business in general means that this will generate short term construction jobs, yes, but not many full time jobs. Even very large data centers like this one employ 30 to 50 people, you just don't need much staff. This one will have a power plant attached so perhaps 30 more people for that, though again a lot of automation will make people a minor component. The future of data centers is Facebook's large one in the Arctic... primarily remotely controlled. The jobs rhetoric whips up support but we can't be so naive in Delaware any more. It's difficult to become informed but it does matter.
- This appears to be a bait and switch, the data center said they required their own power generation, OK, but now everyone discovers that they are really building a large power plant to sell power to others. and our governor , who does not live in the affected area, is involved. I wonder if this company have made campaign contributions to political candidates ? We grow a bit tired of the DELAWARE WAY. Now someone commented that if the data center grows, it will use 50 % of the power from the plant, which means the power plant is still over sized. Funny I do not remember any of this EXTRA POWER GENERATION being mentioned on the plant roll out. Does anyone remember the crude oil train cars exploding in Canada ? Well we have those same explosive cars rolling right by homes in Delaware now. Where is the concern for quality of life and safety?
- The whole point of being in 'the cloud' is that physical location doesn't matter. Why would a company incur the expense of physically locating in Delaware when they can access the services provided by this company from anywhere in the world? This isn't going to be something bringing more companies and more work to this area.
- And please stop talking about Chrysler. Chrysler is Gone. Stop talking about what WAS.
Please keep in mind that Chrysler provided 5,100 people good union paying jobs in the late sixties.
Chrysler provided far more jobs than the 290 TDC promises to bring. (Many question if it will even come close to 290). Take this Data Center/Power Plant OUT OF NEWARK!!!
Also, (Newark Post) Karie Simmons reports ~ UD faculty, residents continue to question proposed power plant
And from Roe for Mayor of Newark This plant will not comply with RGGI. TDC has said they plan to use 23.75 MW turbines and according to DAQ only 25 MW+ turbines have to comply with RGGI.
The word of the night for opponents of the proposed data center and power plant during Monday's council meeting was "transparency," and the lack of it.
Many residents said they still feel uncomfortable with how information on the project was released to the public and accused council, the University of Delaware and The Data Centers, LLC executives of being untruthful and withholding information.

- It may be interesting to see if these "small" gas plants are country wide- in order to create demand for gas. With some extras.....
