Delawareans Educate Themselves and Make Their Voices Heard regarding Shutdown, Congressional Priorities
Tuesday, October 15, a handful of Delawareans will gather at Congressman Carney's Wilmington office (233 N King St; Wilmington, DE 19801) at 3pm to deliver petitions and share their concerns regarding the government shutdown and Congressional priorities. This will include a petition with over 500 signatures asking Congressman Carney to stand strong against tea party Republicans, a faith leader letter around budget priorities signed by Bishops Peggy Johnson and Wayne Wright, among others, and petitions with over 200 signatures calling for public investment and an end to corporate tax dodging. The Delawareans present will also deliver a Cease & Desist letter for Congressman Carney to give to Speaker Boehner, which will call on Boehner to cease and desist harmful policies like the government shutdown and the sequester and instead begin corrective action such as public investment and ending corporate tax dodging. Americans concerned about the government shutdown and Congress's priorities will be participating in similar actions around the country tomorrow.
On Saturday, October 19, at 10am, Delawareans will gather at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Newark (420 Willa Rd; Newark, DE 19711) for a town hall forum on federal fiscal issues. They will hear from panelists such as Senator Dave Sokola, Representative Paul Baumbach, Delaware Alliance for Community Advancement Executive Director Darlene Battle, and Grassroots Manager of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security & Medicare John Glaser (from Washington, DC).
Panelists will talk about how the government shutdown and federal fiscal policies have impacted and could impact Delawareans as well as paths forward. Attendees will then share their own views and ask their questions around the government shutdown and related fiscal issues regarding cuts and revenue.
The forum is sponsored by Delaware ADA, the UUFN's Social Justice Steering Committee, DACA, AFSCME Council 81, DSEA, SEIU 32BJ, NCPSSM, and Delaware NOW.
