Annual Dinner and Peacemakers Among Us Award There will be adequate sanitation at Pacem in Terris's Annual Dinner on Thursday, October 24. This event is Pacem's big fun-raiser of the year. Come find out who receives the PeaceMakers Among Us Award. Enjoy the culinary delights. (Check out the menu.)
The speaker will be Dr. Edgar S. Cahn, CEO & Chairman of TimeBanks USA. Dr. Cahn is the originator of Time Dollars and the President and Founder of the Time Dollar USA, as well as the co-founder of the National Legal Services Program and the Antioch School of Law (now the David A. Clarke School of Law). He is the author of No More Throw Away People: The Co-Production Imperative, Time Dollars, Our Brother’s Keeper: The Indian in White America, and Hunger USA.
Dr. Cahn is a compelling, eloquent speaker with a sense of humor who inspires audiences with a sense not only that social justice matters, but also that it calls for immediate action. For over four decades, his own life has stood as a model for action and as a testament to his abiding concern for the rights, welfare, and dignity of the disenfranchised. Nuclear InsanityHydrogen Bomb Nearly Detonated Over North Carolina in 1961 A U.S. government document obtained under the Freedom of Information Act describes how close the U.S. came to self-inflicted nuclear disaster in 1961. Two nuclear bombs were on board a B-52 bomber that lost control over North Carolina. Both bombs were released from the plane. One bomb remained unarmed and fell to the ground. However, the second bomb went through all its arming mechanisms except one, and nearly detonated. The failure of a single low-voltage switch prevented the four-megaton bomb from exploding.
Outrage of the Week"At least let’s name this for what it is, sabotage of the democratic process. Secession by another means. And let’s be clear about where such reckless ambition leads." Bill Moyers On the Sabotage of DemocracyVideo of the week
Quote of the weekA couple tourists - alien life forms - returning from an eco-tour on Earth are chatting. One of them says, “The dominant life form on the planet has developed satellite-based weapons.” Excited by the possibility, the other one asks, “Do you think they are an emerging intelligence?” The first one responds, “I doubt it: they've aimed the weapons at themselves.”
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed." -Dwight D. Eisenhower
