Federal protections for the families of military members in America date back to the Civil War. Today, we know them as the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, or SCRA. The SCRA caps interest rates on most loans, and postpones civil proceedings such as foreclosure or other debt-related lawsuits, during a deployment -- allowing our fighting men and women to focus on the task at hand, rather than the wellbeing of their families back home.
Unfortunately, financial institutions -- many of the same banks that contributed to the Great Recession -- violated the SCRA and broke the law.
Recent violations of the SCRA have made it clear to me that we must be ever vigilant in enforcing the financial protections that our service members rely on.
Congress can and should put procedures in place to ensure that active duty military members and their families are receiving adequate protection from financial institutions. Tell Congress: Strengthen and expand the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act. Sign the petition today.
Strengthen and Expand Protections for our Military Members
Dear Members of Congress:
Our service men and women put their lives on the line, leave their families and friends, to defend our freedom. While they are deployed, they should not have to worry about defending their families back home as well.
The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act protects our military members and their families from financial institutions during deployment. I urge you to take actions to strengthen and expand the SCRA to ensure that this law is strictly enforced.
Signed,
Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden
