Veteran thanks TDC opposition
I had the pleasure of serving this country before I chose Newark, DE to settle down in the Binns. The Binns is a wonderful neighborhood because you see people riding bikes, running, and walking with their families while enjoying talking to their neighbors. It feels like a real community and I cherish it. Now we know that a 279 mW power plant is moving in to the neighborhood, roughly 1500 ft from my front doorstep.
I cannot even imagine what this business venture is going to do to the people in my area. I can tell you that they are probably like me. Lying awake late at night, wondering what is going to happen. Will it be safe enough to live beside? Will my family get sick? Will the current zoning fight be resolved? Can I trust Gene Kern who says, trust us, trust us… and the investors in the shadows? And finally… How could this have happened?
I have worked all my life (mostly in the military) to finally attain what some people dream about all their lives. A modest home in a neighborhood worth fighting for. To the people that call me a NIMBY, the idea of a 279 mW power plant is in my back yard is like the idea of cancer to me. It does not really concern you until someone you love and care about is stricken by it. Then you care. You care a lot. I care about my family, my community, and the idea that in this democratic society the people still have a say… a say that my brothers and sisters fought for in foreign lands.
One more thing; it bothers me that the people supporting TDC are trying to marginalize my community. They are implying that the collateral damage that this power plant will cause is acceptable. This is America where the people like myself will be heard and no one can escape the blinding light of the truth. That this power plant proposal was planned in the backchannels, getting the go-ahead WITHOUT the public’s input. The light of that truth is blinding.
So, on this Veterans Day thank a veteran, and then if you see someone that is providing a service to this community, such as Amy Roe or John Kuwalko, tip your hat. They deserve it more than you know.
Sincerely,
Silence DoGood
Newark
